Hamza functions as a vowel separator. It has no sounds of its own.
Connections
Occasionally two vowels occur together in a word without an intervening consonant. In such cases Hamza is inserted to carry the second vowel. The first vowel can be long or short. For example:
</tbody.
| ल ए | fill-in | <- | fill-in |
| गऊ | fill-in | <- | fill-in |
| नाई | fill-in | <- | fill-in |
| जा ओ | fill-in | <- | fill-in |
On a detached و (VĀO) Hamza is put directly on top of the و without any cusp.
| For example | खाओ = fill-in | गाओ = fill-in | आओ = fill-in |
But a final form (connected) VĀO needs an additional cusp for Hamza:
गऊ = fill-in
