Hamza functions as a vowel separator. It has no sounds of its own.

Connections

Occasionally two vowels occur together in a word without an intervening consonant. In such cases Hamza is inserted to carry the second vowel. The first vowel can be long or short. For example:

</tbody.

ल ए fill-in <- fill-in
गऊ fill-in <- fill-in
नाई fill-in <- fill-in
जा ओ fill-in <- fill-in

On a detached و (VĀO) Hamza is put directly on top of the و without any cusp.

For example खाओ = fill-in गाओ = fill-in आओ = fill-in

But a final form (connected) VĀO needs an additional cusp for Hamza:
गऊ = fill-in
