HAY is one of the TWO “h” sounds in Urdu. Both sound the same. However, you must learn when to use each one. They are not interchangeable.
We call ہ the Hindi HAY to distinguish it from Arabic HAY ح.
In many cases, when ہ occurs at the end of a word following a consonant, it sounds like a final ALIF. In fact, most nouns (including proper nouns) ending in a long “a” sound should be spelled with ہ at the end instead of final ALIF. This is similar to the final “h” in English names like Sarah and Deborah.

HAY can connect from both sides: Thus it has four forms: detached, initial, medial, and final.

The little inverted comma below the medial form of HAY is sometimes omitted.

Initial HAY takes slightly different forms depending on the following letter. With most letters it has a tiny hook shape. Before ALIF and letters in the point system family, it just a single cusp. No matter what its shape, the initial form always has the small comma underneath.
